Water as the Source of Urban Public Spaces
City of Mechelen, Belgium - an European Urban Initiative Innovative Action (2024-2027)Over 3.5 years, the City of Mechelen in Belgium is reinterpreting its connection to water and biodiversity. By redesigning the public spaces along the River Binnendijle for multiple user groups, including plants and animals, the project explores how urban environments can reflect ecological relationships. As a New European Bauhaus demonstrator, it focuses on creating inclusive, nature-connected public spaces that are both beautiful and ecologically resilient.
